Background
BIOGRAPHY he remembers the laughter and the music echoing through the halls of their home. the sounds of his parents’ footsteps clicking and tapping against the sleek hardwood floors of their home as they practiced ballroom routines in the living room. dance, and the language of it, had never been some distant or unfamiliar thing to him; it was the thing that brought and kept his family together.and long before he understood what that language meant for him, he found himself mimicking his parents’ steps and finding great comfort and joy in it.his parents recognized early on the natural affinity he had for dance, but instead of pressuring him to tread the path they took, they quietly, gently encouraged him instead to pursue it at his own pace. “you’ll know when your voice comes to you,” they’d once told him. “so don’t be afraid to try out different things and see what speaks to you.” and so he did just that.throughout his teenage years, taemin took part in every workshop he could squeeze himself into, from hip hop to jazz funk, ballet to heels. each of these styles had taught him something different about the craft and how to hone his, but it wasn’t until he found contemporary dance that he understood what it was his parents meant.for the first time, he had a freedom that he hadn’t found anywhere else. other styles had taught him about discipline and control; contemporary, on the other hand, allowed him to more freely explore the emotions and story behind each movement. he learned that vulnerability did not mean weakness, and that sometimes the rawest truths were the ones where not a single word needed to be spoken.that’s why, at twenty-three, when he’d injured himself during preparations for a larger scale performance, the feeling that came over him was not simply one of despair over not being able to dance and perform.it was terror.the studio had become a prison where he could only watch from the sidelines as his team continued with their rehearsals. he’d told them he was fine, that he’d heal in a matter of no time, but the injury wasn’t the thing he worried about. it was his team, the people who believed in him, the people who’d come from all over to see him and his troupe perform, and whether he’d ever find his way back to the thing that had given him his voice in the first place.yet during his recovery period, he discovered something else unexpected. even when he could not actively participate in rehearsals and performances, he still found ways in which he could help others find their own rhythm.he spoke softly to the newer additions to the troupe, suggested formation adjustments, and personally spent time with the understudy taking his place going over finer details and having them practice the routines again and again until they felt confident in their ability to execute it in their own voice.it took him about a year before he returned to the stage, but in that time, he’d changed. dance was no longer solely a means of personal expression, though that is still a huge part of it for him. it was also something that could be shared, nurtured, and passed on, because in the end, dance had always been a language.it was the language his parents spoke with one another long before he’d ever been conceived. the language that gave him his voice when words otherwise failed him. and now, it was the language he used in the hopes to help others also discover themselves.
